Artist profile: Zenzzen – Otaku Tarot

Every month, I profile an artist who inspires my own art,
in several segments.

Hey guess what? This is my 200th post!!! Thanks everyone for your views and likes so far!

So, Zenzzen/Denise Jones is working on an Otaku Tarot and it’s awesome! She’s included many characters that I know and love, and they are really good choices for the meanings of the cards. I highly recommend you click on the links and read her info – plus you can see the images larger.
The Creatrix (The Empress)
Starring the Shishigami (nature spirit) from Mononoke Hime/Princess Mononoke with little kodoma in the foreground, viewable here.
Starring Kagome and Inuyasha from Inuyasha. These characters are perfect – this card usually has a woman with her hand on the head of a lion, symbolizing that she has tamed it with her inner strength. Kagome yells “sit!” at Inuyasha, and his enchanted necklace causes him to slam into the ground – quite a literal representation of the Strength card. Viewable here.
The Hermit
Kaos/the Ancient is from Yoroiden Samurai Troopers/Ronin Warriors, one of my first anime. As a mysterious teacher and mentor, he suits The Hermit to a tee. Note that the glowing staff is like The Hermit’s lamp. Viewable here.
Starring Alphonse and Edward from Fullmetal Alchemist. I didn’t see the connection at first, but Zenzzen says: “The Law of Equivalent Exchange says that nothing can be gained without exchanging something of equivalent value. This is one of the simplest views of what constitutes justice, and was indeed the basis of the Code of Hammurabi, the first recorded set of laws.” I can see that. Viewable here.
I’m so tickled that Zenzzen has included not only Kaos/the Ancient from Yoroiden Samurai Troopers/Ronin Warriors, but also Shuten Douji/Anubis! Shuten was totally my favorite character in the series. He goes through a lot of soul searching and changes, and kicks ass both as a bad guy and a good guy. And he has pretty hair. Viewable here.
