I use the term Senshi interchangeably with “Scouts” and “Guardian”.
Episode 7: Mamoru Chiba – Tuxedo Mask
Lo, the day Sailor V makes an appearance is nigh!
At the beginning of the episode, it is revealed that Sailor V and Luna have been collaborating. This is exciting news, and great foreshadowing for the end of the episode.
We see some feelings between Usagi and Mamoru – while she is in his apartment, they talk a little about how he has dreams about the Legendary Silver Crystal, and that he’s an orphan who survived the car crash that killed his parents. What I’d like to know is how he can afford a nice apartment in Tokyo all by himself.
I thought the nicknaming was cute. Mamoru nicknames her Usa-ko (which shortens her name – which means “rabbit” – and adds “child” to the end, so I guess that would mean “Bunny Kid”? Don’t quote me) – and we all know that nicknaming someone in Japan means something special. After leaving his place, Usagi waxes romantic that his nickname would be “Mamo-chan”.
Usagi accidentally took Mamoru’s pocketwatch, and Usagi had left her handkerchief behind
/Mamoru took it (who knows) at the ball in episode 4, and each lovingly caresses the other’s personal possession. Besides the whole unconscious kissing crap, I’ve enjoyed seeing the two of them develop feelings for each other – going from crush to the promise of something with more depth.
Remember in the first episode when I pointed out that modern technology has been seamlessly included in this reboot? Well, this episode marks the first appearance of a tablet – owned by Ami, who is the most likely character to have one. I think it’s called “Fine Pad” in the upper-left corner.
The episode’s plot is that Zoisite has filled a movie rental store with DVDs that compel people (mostly young people) to find Sailor Moon. This is the third time that digital media has been used to brainwash teenagers; I don’t know if this is intentional, but it seems to be a theme.
With people roving the streets and smashing store windows in search of Sailor Moon, Usagi decides to transform to lure out whoever is behind it. Previous to this, we have a lovely shot of the Cosmo Clock 21 ferris wheel and its roller coaster in the background.
I couldn’t help but laugh when Zoisite showed up – Sailor Moon was so happy that she had cured the brainwashed people, and he lands BAM and sends her flying. Sorry Usagi, it was just too funny!
And then finally!! Sailor V shows up in the most badass, dramatic way possible, and I can’t wait for the next episode!
I’m curious about her outfit, though. As you can see in the pictures on Ami’s tablet, Sailor V wears a more boxy outfit (as she does in the manga Codename: Sailor V). She also has a crescent moon on her forehead and uses a crescent blade as a weapon, so… what exactly is going on? I guess she must have had a new transformation off-screen, but she stole the moon symbols from Sailor Moon? I guess we’ll find out later.
